If you haven’t heard, Audionamix is the leader in reverse audio engineering, and developed a unique source separation technology for the entertainment industry. Our proprietary algorithms have been used in both legendary and contemporary titles such as West Side Story, The Blues Brothers, Psycho, Inception and the sequel to the box office hit Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows. Not only does the ADX technology unlock creativity but it has also proven to save thousands of dollars in licensing and distribution costs.

So What Does that Mean for You?

If you are attending the MIDEM, chances are that you have a real interest in the business of music. Several services in our portfolio have been utilized to help our clients in the music and film industry recognize and earn new incremental revenue.

ADX Music Dissociation

ADX Music Dissociation, for instance, unlocks dormant assets by removing the music from a composite mix, while leaving the original dialogue and effects tracks intact. This service has proven very valuable to networks when licensing TV and movie content. With the invention of Internet streaming solutions such as Netflix and Hulu, music licensing contracts often require renegotiation, the cost of which can stall a deal or sometimes even leave it sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Using our unique Music Dissociation service, our clients are able to remove the music from locked audio assets and replace them with more affordable solutions to offer viewers re-releases of classic titles that would otherwise be locked in the vaults.

ADX Dialogue Isolation

ADX Instrumental Creation gives you the missing instrumentals you need for your licensing deliverables. Record labels and publishers are often faced with requests for instrumental versions of the recordings they license for synchronization purposes. When these instrumentals are unavailable, the most common solution is to license a different track. Although this alternative is a standard compromise, it may not hold the same monetary or artistic value. It may also mean the loss of a deal for the label.

Our studies and discussions show that up to 80% of the most frequently licensed tracks at labels do not have an instrumental version. This represents a substantial risk of loss of revenue for labels.

ADX Sound Similarity Search Engine

This newest tool in our arsenal of services provides content owners with a solution for searching replacement music by using an algorithm to match similar tempos, harmonies and timbre. Currently in beta, this new service, coupled with our proprietary music dissociation service, will provide an all-in-one solution to reduce your music licensing costs.

Most recently, Audionamix’s team of audio engineers were called upon to use ADX proprietary Stem Creation technology to provide legendary composer Hans Zimmer, artistic liberty while creating the soundscape for Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Last year, Audionamix provided a similar service for Hans Zimmer in the box-office hit Inception. Our challenge from Mr. Zimmer in this feature film was to provide his production team the ability to re-position and manipulate not just one, but three operatic voices of an original stereo composite mix. This would enable the audio mixer to match the production perspective of the actors on screen. We also needed to provide enough separation of the voices to allow the audio mixer control of the volume of the individual voices within the fixed mix so that after the original recording was augmented, its voices could be raised or lowered in specific areas, thus allowing Mr. Zimmer to fully realize his creative vision during the Don Giovanni opera scene.

Audionamix prides itself on working closely with our clients’ production team in order to reach their individual creative objectives, and this film was no exception. Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows premiered on December 16th and is currently in theaters across the country.

With the help of MGM, the Bernstein Office, Chace Audio, a Deluxe Company and Fiat Lux, Audionamix has created a brand new documentary West Side Story: Reviving the Masterpiece, which will give viewers an in-depth look at how this musical masterpiece was recomposed to be performed by a live orchestra.

The five minute documentary details the challenge of removing the vocals from this musical masterpiece, while keeping all of the dialogue and effects intact. As reported earlier, the music was then replaced by a live orchestra and was performed in Los Angeles, New York, and most recently Chicago. Next year, the production takes place oversees with scheduled performances in London and Japan.

West Side Story was just the beginning; there are hundreds of classic films that could benefit from this type of service. Audionamix looks forward to using our services to bring other timeless classics back to life.

This year Audionamix had the distinct honor of working with some of the biggest and best names in film, television and music. Our proprietary Music Dissociation technology was used to create a new way of experiencing the timeless, classic musical, West Side Story. Our Stem Creation technology assisted Hans Zimmer’s production team in unleashing their creativity in another feature film for the second year in a row. Our Dialogue Isolation technology made it possible for NBC/Universal to release the classic John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd film The Blues Brothers in 5.1 surround sound in several languages.

We have also been able to help major television studios such as CBS save hundreds of thousands of dollars when re-purposing their back catalog for digital distribution. As we continue to build upon existing relationships and increase our client base, Audionamix is poised to bring our innovative technology to all major networks and studios, domestically and internationally. In 2012, the sky is the limit for Audionamix and its valued partners and clients. We look forward to soaring with you.

When I first was presented with the idea of leading Audionamix back in 2008, I thought about the dynamic impact our technology could have on the world. Just as companies such as Technicolor revolutionized the film in television industries in the 1900′s, ADX’s source separation technology has the potential to transform the film, television, and music industry. Over the past few years, Audionamix has grown from a research company to a world leading service provider.

We would not be where we are today if it were not for the help of our clients and partners. This year, we have had the honor of working with iconic titles such as West Side Story and the Blues Brothers, amongst others. We have also had the privilege of working with some of the best companies in the film, television, and music industries.

Thank you CBS for allowing us to revive some of your dormant assets. We look forward to continuing our partnership.

Thank you to the Bernstein Foundation for trusting us with one of the top five musicals in the world.

Thank you Warner Brothers Animation for allowing us to work on Sylvester and Tweety.

Thank you Hans Zimmer and the team at Remote Control Productions for using our source separation technology in “Inception.”

Thank you XTracks for allowing us the opportunity to work with you.

Thank you Chace Audio, A Deluxe Company, for being one of the first to trust our technology.

I know that there are others that have helped us grow into the innovative service provider we have become. In case I have missed anyone, thanks to all who have helped Audionamix along the way.

We couldn’t have done it without you and we look forward to enhancing our partnerships in the future.

Last month, along with being featured in both the New York Times and Forbes for our work on West Side Story, Audionamix was also highlighted in Film and Sound Magazine.
Eleonor Sandresky, a New York composer, producer and performer, who also serves as the Bernstein Office’s Licensing Associate, was faced with the daunting task of tracking down West Side Story’s original score. To her dismay, there were no musical stems and the original score had been displaced in several locations across the country. Then there was the matter of getting the project approved by MGM who own the rights to the film. After overcoming these challenges, the final obstacle was to separate the music from the score so it could be played with a live orchestra. With the the help of Chace Audio, A Deluxe Company, the Bernstein Office learned of our source separation technology and called Audionamix to see if our technology could provide the solution.

Audionamix rose to the occasion, separating the music from the original score and producing a pristine, a cappella version that could be accompanied by a live orchestra thus creating this new type of event cinema. The premiere was held in July at the Hollywood Bowl, and due to its success, is scheduled to be performed in venues across the globe.
The next performance of West Side Story will be held in Chicago on November 25-27th.
